The deer is Britain's largest native land mammal. The Scottish mountains are one of the main areas they are seen. We were lucky enough to have seen them in the rutting season. Whilst on a break in Scotland with the family. A very noisy time for such a tranquil place
 
Females are called hinds and they live in herds led by matriarchs. Each hind herd spends their whole lives in one area and know it very well. The hinds give birth to single calves which have white spots, during May and June
 
Female red deer don't have antlers.
